It was 11:30 PM. Lira was sitting quietly in a corner of her bed. A colleague at the office had handed her extra work once again. Even though she was exhausted, she typed, "Okay, I'll get it done." Just then, her mother called—"There is a boy from a good family; at least meet him this time. How many more times will you say no?" Lira wanted to say something, but she stopped herself. From a young age, she was taught that disagreeing with elders meant being a bad girl. If she ever spoke up about her own choices, she was told, "Don't be so stubborn; you have to compromise and adjust." Today, Lira is an adult. She has her own job and the right to make her own decisions. Yet, saying the word "no" remains incredibly difficult for her. That night, Lira asked herself, "Who am I really afraid of?" She realized that this fear wasn't a recent development. Childhood fears, guilt, expectations, and the habit of constantly suppressing her own desires had slowly forged an invisible chain inside her. Some chains aren't visible from the outside. Family, society, fear, guilt, and the beliefs ingrained in us during childhood can unknowingly control our lives.
